Alipurduar/Kolkata, Jan 7 (IBNS): Taking law in his own hand, young IAS officer and the District Magistrate (DM) of West Bengal's Alipurduar district, Nikhil Nirmal, along with his wife, Nandhini Krishnan, thrashed and threatened a youth inside a police station for allegedly posting vulgar and abusive comments on social platforms, a viral social media video showed on Sunday.

According to reports, recently Binod Sarkar, a resident of Harinathpur area under Falakata Police Station limits in Alipurduar district, allegedly posted few obscene and lewd comments about Alipurduar DM's wife Nandhini Krishnan on social platforms followed by which the lady lodged a complaint with the local police against the man.

After police detained the accused and took him to Falakata police station, DM Nikhil Nirmal along with his wife reached the police station on Sunday morning and they both beat up the guy in presence of police officials, including Falakata PS's Inspector-in-Charge (IC) Soumyajit Roy.

Someone, present inside the police station during the incident, captured the entire episode on mobile phone and uploaded on social platforms.

After the 5 minutes 52 seconds long video clip went viral on social media, Nikhil Nirmal, a 2011 Bengal cadre IAS officer from Kerala, has been sent on a 10-day compulsory leave, sources in the state administration said.

DM Nikhil Nirmal, Alipurduar SP Sunil Kumar Yadav and Falakata police station's IC Soumyajit Roy denied to speak on the matter.

Meanwhile, supporting her husband's action, DM's wife wrote on her Facebook wall that she was proud of her husband for whatever he did with the youth.

A local police official, however, said that the accused had been taken to custody.

"Based on a complaint, the youth has been arrested for posting vulgar and abusive comments about a woman on social media and adequate legal actions have been initiated against him," a police official told IBNS.

"The man will be produced before a local court today (Monday)," the official added.
