Lakhimpur Kheri violence: 200 witnesses to be examined, trial to take 5 years, SC told
New Delhi/UNI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday observed that a report filed by the Uttar Pradesh government, the trial in the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence case involving Ashish Mishra as prime accused, will take at least five years to conclude as over 200 witnesses have to be examined.
A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Justice Surya Kant and also comprising Justice V Ramasubramanian, while referring to the status report on the case, observed, "Report says it will take at least 5 years. More than 200 witnesses."
The Supreme Court had, last month, asked its registrar to ascertain from the Additional Sessions Judge at Lakhimpur Kheri as to how much time the trial in the case on Lakhmipur Kheri violence is likely to take for conclusion.
The judges had asked the Uttar Pradesh government to file an additional affidavit giving details about the progress and pace of investigation and proceedings on the complaint by one, Sumit Jaiswal.
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Ajay Mishra Teni’s son and prime accused, Ashish Mishra alias Monu in the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri accident case is yet to get relief from the Supreme Court on Wednesday.
Ashish Mishra failed to get any relief, as the Supreme Court fixed his bail plea for hearing on January 19, Thursday.
The Supreme Court today said it will hear Ashish Mishra's bail plea in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case on January 19.
