Kolkata/IBNS: Two rowing players died after their boat was hit by a thunderstorm which was accompanied by a heavy downpour in Kolkata's Rabindra Sarobar Saturday, media reports said.

Four players were training ahead of their final match, which is scheduled for Sunday, at Sarobar Lake, which is located in a posh area of south Kolkata.

Two of the four players reportedly drowned and went missing until their bodies were recovered from the lake.

When they were rushed to a hospital, the two players were declared brought-dead.

While one of the deceased was reportedly a student from South Point School, the other is the son of a police official.

Hearing the news, Kolkata Mayor and top minister of the West Bengal government, Firhad Hakim, went to the spot.

Kolkata was lashed by a heavy downpour coupled with thunderstorms at around 4:30 pm, following days of intense heat and soaring temperature.
