Kolkata to witness taxi strike tomorrow
Kolkata, Dec 18 (IBNS): Taxi drivers, under the leadership of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) and taxi owners under the leadership of the Bengal Taxi Association (BTA) have called taxi strike in Kolkata on Friday.
Other unions except Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress (INTTUC) have supported this taxi strike.
General secretary of the AITUC-affiliated Kolkata Taxi Operator’s Union, Nawal Kishor Shrivastav said that they would continue their protest movement until West Bengal government withdraws their increased refusal charges.
CITU leader and former labour minister of Left ruled WB government, Anadi Sahu said,"Our another demand is that West Bengal government has to take an immediate action to stop police atrocities on taxi drivers."
A huge number of taxis are likely to be withdrawn from the roads of Kolkata on Friday.
The General Secretory of Bengal Taxi Association (BTA) Bimal Guha said, "We have already given a long time to the government of West Bengal to fulfill our demands, but they did not give importance on that. That's why we have to join this strike with other unions."
"In emergency cases only, we will provide our service on Friday. If anyone needs taxi service urgently, he/she has to call us to get doorstep taxi service," he added. The emergency phone numbers are: (033) 2474 2249 & (033) 2475 3505.
The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has also called a protest march towards the new administrative building of WB government, Nabanna on Friday.
