Kolkata: Left Front holds sit-in-demonstration against electricity price hike

Kolkata, Sep 9 (IBNS): Protesting against the rising electricity charges in Kolkata and the rest of West Bengal, the Kolkata unit of West Bengal Left Front (LF) is hosting sit-in-demonstrations in front of the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation Ltd. (CESC) headquarters, Victoria House in Esplanade and in front of the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd. head office, Vidyut Bhawan at Salt Lake area here on Wednesday.

Top Left leaders, including WB LF's chairman Biman Basu, CITU leader Shyamal Chakraborty, Sujan Chakraborty, Manab Mukherjee, Rabin Deb, Md. Salim and the mayor of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation Ashok Bhattacharya, joined the agitation here at Esplanade area.

WB LF chairman Biman Basu said, "I support the movement organized by the Kolkata unit of the Left Front. This is a movement of five states where CESC supplies electricity. This movement will be continued in various forms."

Shyamal Chakraborty said that their movement will continue in every districts until the hiked electricity charges are reduced.

CPI-M leader Sujan Chakraborty said, "We have to continue our protest movement against the rising electricity charges in the city and state level. Electricity charge in Kolkata has been raised 1.5 times since 2011."

Ashok Bhattacharya said, "State and central- both the governments are cheating with the general people. Electricity-price hike is a problem of the entire state. We will organize bigger movements in future."

The sit-in-demonstration will continue till Thursday.

After the programme, a deputation along with the signatures of general people, in favour of this movement, will be submitted to WB governor Keshrinath Tripathi.
