Kolkata: At least two die as old building collapses in heavy rain

Kolkata, July 23 (IBNS): At least two persons were killed and two others seriously injured as a major portion of a dilapidated building collapsed in heavy rain in Kolkata in the wee hours of Monday, reports said.

According to reports, a portion of the two-storey building collapsed in the  Baithakkhana Road area under Muchipara Police Station  in central part of the city at around 2 am.

Following the incident, local police, fire and emergency services officials and Disaster Management Group (DMG) personnel rushed to the scene and recovered to bodies from the debris.

A local police official said that the deceased have been identified as Gopal Naskar (60) and Manik Jana (48) who were the residents of the building.

"Two more residents of the collapsed two-storey, Ratan Jana and Binod Shaw, were rescued injured from the wreckage and were admitted in Nil Ratan Sarkar (NRS) Medical College and Hospital nearby," the police official told IBNS.

Officials of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) said that the building had been declared as hazardous.

"After the completion of rescue operation, corporation will demolish the remaining part of the dilapidated building," a KMC official said.

A senior city police official said that rescue efforts is still underway at the scene to confirm that no more person is trapped under the debris.
