Kerala temple fire: Death toll reaches 102, temple defied prohibitory orders from govt.
Slamming the incident, Kerala CM Oomen Chandy said that the temple had defied orders from the state government, who asked them not to indulge in competitive fireworks, a traditional thing in the state during the week long worship of Goddess Kali.
The fire started at around 3 a.m. on Sunday, after a spark from a burst cracker fell on top of other crackers kept separately on the ground.
Around 15,000 people witnessed the spectre, people who had gathered to see the night long fireworks.
Condoling the incident, PM Modi had tweeted, "Fire at temple in Kollam is heart-rending & shocking beyond words. My thoughts are with families of the deceased & prayers with the injured."
Similar tweets emerged from Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Congress VP Rahul Gandhi, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and his Kerala counterpart Oomen Chandy, all of whom condoled the loss.
