Kerala student rape and murder: Migrant labourer from Assam arrested
Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 16 (IBNS): The police have arrested a migrant labourer from Assam in connection with the rape and murder of a Dalit student in Ernakulam district of Kerala, media reports said.
The 30-year old student was raped, mutilated and murdered at her home on April 28, at a time when Kerala was getting ready for its Assembly elections.
NDTV, quoting police, reported that the man, identified as Amir-Ul-Islam was living and working in the area around the home of the woman, whose killing had been described as a "blind murder" by new police chief Loknath Behara.
The case drew wide-spread attention not only for its gruesome nature but also because of the alleged administrative negligence.
After becoming the chief minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan formed a new team to investigate the case. A senior woman IPS officer was appointed as head of a Special Investigation Team to probe the case, the media reported
The newly-appointed Commissioner of Police Loknath Behera also visited the student's home.
