Kerala landslides due to rain kill 22 people
Thiruvanthapuram, Aug 9 (IBNS) : At least 22 people, inclding five members of a family, were killed as severe rain pounded Kerala triggering landslides, reports said.
The heavy downpour began on Tuesday night and several districts have been affected due to the rains.
The rains have also caused the water level at dams to go up.
According to reports, 22 dams in the state have been opened to avoid any disaster.
Meanwhile, the Kochi airport has been closed as water entered inside it.
According to reports, Idukki district accounted for the maximum number of deaths (10), followed by Malappuram (5), Kannur (2) and Wayanad (1).
In Idukki's Adimali town, five members of a family have perished.
Reports of people going missing following the calamity came from Palakkad, Wayanad and Kozhikode.
The rain has caused inundation of the state's low lying areas. A team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has moved to Kozhikode for rescue operations.
The State Government has sought from the Centre two more NDRF teams.
