Thiruvananthapuram/IBNS: Amid a spike in daily Covid cases in Kerala, the lockdown in the state has been extended till May 30.

The southern state on Friday reported 142 deaths. However, the number of fresh infections reported a dip with 29,673 new cases over the last 24 hours.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the media that the "triple lockdown" imposed in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Thrissur will be withdrawn as the positivity rate and active caseload have dropped in these districts.

Normal lockdown restrictions will be in place in these districts. The triple lockdown in Malappuram, however, will continue.

The state presently has 3,06, 346 active cases and the test positivity rate reported on Friday was 22.22 per cent.

To contain the spike in Covid cases, the state government first imposed a lockdown from May 8 to May 16. It was subsequently extended to May 23.
