Karnataka hijab row: Schools for classes Classes 9, 10 to reopen from Monday
Bengaluru/IBNS: Schools for classes 9 and 10 will reopen in Karnataka from Monday, the state government has announced, three days after it ordered a shut down amid a row over wearing hijab by students.
A decision on whether to allow pre-university or PU, colleges for Classes 11 and 12 to reopen will be decided later.
No decision has been taken yet for universities and higher education colleges.
Students till Classes 8 were allowed to attend school during the shutdown.
In a tweet, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday appealed to students to maintain peace and informed them about the order of high schools and colleges' closure.
"I appeal to all the students, teachers and management of schools and colleges as well as people of Karnataka to maintain peace and harmony. I have ordered closure of all high schools and colleges for next three days. All concerned are requested to cooperate," Bommai had tweeted.
The controversy started last month at the Government Girls PU College in Karnataka's Udupi when six students alleged that they were not allowed in the classes for insisting on wearing the headscarf.
The Karnataka High Court is hearing petitions filed by five women from the government college in Udupi, questioning hijab restrictions. The court has also appealed for peace to the students amid intense protests.
The high court will continue hearing the matter on Monday. The court has asked students and the public at large to maintain peace.
A three-judge bench of the high court on Thursday refused to grant interim relief to petitioners seeking admission into classrooms wearing hijab in colleges and adjourned hearing on the hijab row to Monday.
"We are ready to decide the issue at the earliest. But we feel that peace and tranquility should be restored... You should not insist on wearing these religious clothes which are not conducive," it said.
