Bengaluru/IBNS: Bengaluru and six other cities in Karnataka will impose a night curfew from Saturday, the state government announced minutes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraged states to enforce fresh curbs amid rising cases of Covid-19.

The night curfew will be in place from 10 pm to 5 am till April 20, the Karnataka government announced on Thursday.

Besides Bengaluru, the night curfew will also be imposed in Mysuru, Mangaluru, Kalaburagi, Bidar, Tumakuru and Manipal, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa announced.

"Essential services will continue," he said.

Earlier in the evening during a virtual meeting with chief ministers on Covid-19 management, PM Modi said: "The world has also accepted the night curfew. Curfew makes people remember that they are living in the age of Corona. It is good that we promote Night Curfew as 'Corona Curfew'. This will not affect work too much."

In a grim picture, India, which is witnessing a massive surge in Novel Coronavirus cases, on Thursday reported over 1.26 lakh fresh infections from across the vast country of 1.3 billion people.
