Kolkata, Oct 17 (IBNS): Amid protests by students, Jadavpur University vice-chancellor Abhijit Chakraborty visited the institution on Friday.

The students were demonstrating peacefully in front of the main administrative building of the university, Arabinda Bhaban, when the vice-chancellor arrived in the institution.

Protesters did not prevent him from entering the Arabinda Bhaban.

Chakraborty later called a press conference and said all students were just like his 'son and daughters'

He requested the students to stop their protests and to start attending their classes.

he also asked them to take part in a discussion.

Students , however, refused the Vice-Chancellor's proposal and said they will continue their protest until he resigns from his post.

The protesting students of Jadavpur University marked the one-month of the police crackdown on them by hosting a torch rally and participating in a 24-hour token hunger strike on Thursday.

Triggering criticisms, Chakraborty on Sept 16 had called the police to remove protesting students of theuniversity from the main administrative building in the campus. The police had cracked down on agitating protesters and arrested 37 students that night.

Chakraborty did not visit the university for the past few days since the institution opened after the Durga puja vacation on Monday.
