Kolkata, Sep 14 (IBNS): Acting on a tip off, Kolkata Police's Special Task Force (STF) on Thursday evening arrested Bangladeshi terrorist group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB)'s leader Burhan Sheikh in connection with the Khagragarh blast case from central Kolkata, officials said.

According to reports, the nearly 30-year-old militant was held from B.B. Ganguly Street area under Muchipara Police Station limits in central part of the city.

"Acting on specific source inputs, we nabbed JMB leader Burhan Sheikh, who was one of the key accused in Burdwan blast case, from Muchipara area on Thursday evening," a senior official of city police's STF told IBNS.

"Burhan Sheikh hails from Simulia under Mangalkot Police Station limits in West Bengal's East (Purba) Burdwan district and he had been absconding since the blast took place in 2014," the official added. "The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had declared Burhan Sheikh as most wanted and announced a reward of Rs. 3 lakh for his apprehension."

The militant will be produced before Bankshall Court in Kolkata on Friday, officials said.

The Burdwan blast occurred on Oct 2 in 2014 at Khagragarh area in West Bengal's East Burdwan (then Burdwan) district when an IED exploded in a house.

The blast led to the killing of two bomb makers and discovery of a cache of arms and ammunition.

Few days later, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over probe in the matter and filed a charge sheet later before a special court in Kolkata, framing 30 accused under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and several sections of IPC and Arms Act.

A link with the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) was established in the course of investigation into the blast.
