Srinagar/UNI/IBNS: A sarpanch was shot dead by unidentified militants in Kashmir on Friday evening, officials said.

Sarpanch Manzoor Ahmad was shot at and critically wounded by militants in the Goshbugh area of Pattan in Baramulla district.

"He was shifted to hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival," officials said.

The officials said the area has been cordoned to trace the attackers.

The attack on a Panchayat member in north Kashmir comes at a time when there has been a series of targeted attacks on migrant workers and local minorities in south Kashmir in the past few weeks.

On Wednesday, a migrant worker was shot dead in the Kulgam district of  Kashmir.

The victim was identified as Satish Kumar Singh, a driver by profession, who was shot in Kulgam's Kakran village.
