Srinagar:  An unidentified terrorist was killed during an ongoing gun battle in Kashmir on Wednesday morning, officials said.

They said the gunfight broke out in Tral area of Awantipora sub-district in south Kashmir when joint forces launched a cordon and search operation following an input about the presence of militants in the area.

"As the cordon was being laid, militants opened fire on them triggering a gunfight. So far one terrorist has been killed," a security official told UNI.

The identity of the slain militant could not be established immediately.

Police said the operation is still in progress.

"1 terrorist killed. Operation in progress. Further details shall follow," a police tweet said.
