Jammu and Kashmir: Jaish-e-Mohammad militant Sham Sofi dies during encounter in Awantipora

Srinagar: A top Jaish-e-Mohammad militant was killed in South Kashmir's Awantipora during an encounter with security forces on Wednesday, police said.

The terrorist was identified as Jaish e Mohammad commander Sham Sofi.

Kashmir Zone Police tweeted: "Top JeM Commander #terrorist Sham Sofi killed in Tral #Encounter: IGP Kashmir."

The gunfight broke out in Tilwani Mohalla of Tral region when a team of joint forces launched a cordon and search operation following an input about militant presence.

"One terrorist has been killed so far. The operation is underway," a police officer told UNI.

The gunfight at Tral broke a day after five militants were killed in two separate gunfights in South Kashmir' s Shopian district.
