Jaitley defends black money issue in RS, oppositions walkout dissatisfied
New Delhi, Nov 26 (IBNS): Replying to the allegations put forward by the Congress party over the black money issue, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday said the NDA government is working as per the Supreme Court's guidelines and has done enough in 100-days after coming to power.
"NDA government is working as per Supreme Court guidelines," Jaitley said in the Rajya Sabha after being slammed by the oppositions that the BJP government has done nothing about bringing back black money within 100 days in power.
Jaitley said that his government had taken over the job half done by UPA government .
"UPA govt was moving in some other direction. When we took over, it was already half way through," Jaitley said.
"UPA government, when in power, was going against SC orders given on black money," he added.
The Finance Minister said that in its first meeting, his government accepted the apex court's directions and constituted the SIT.
He said the issue of bringing back black money is far more important than UPA vs NDA fight.
"There was no clause for exchange of information with Switzerland till 2011," Jaitley said.
The Minister informed that out of 627 cases, the government has traced 427.
"Notices were sent to all the account holders and out of 427 names 250 have admitted to having an account," he added.
"Issue is not to disclose the names or not, the issue is when and how to disclose the names," the Minister said.
"We have done more in 100 days than any other government," he defended.
However the oppositions were not satisfied with the replies and the Congress as well as the Samajwadi Party (SP) staged a walkout from the house.
Earlier in the day, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA came under scathing attack from Congress on the issue of black money in Parliament.
During the debate on the issue, the Congress took the initiative to corner the government in both the houses.
While the Congress leader in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge was handed the responsibility, another party leader Anand Sharma took the reins in Rajya Sabha.
In Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge accused Modi government of "making a mountain out of a molehill". He said, "NDA questions our integrity, what about theirs? Mountain out of a molehill (khoda pahaad nikla chuha). Government must stop big talk. Government said there were 50 names, didn't reveal them."
Kharge said, "There were discussions on black money even at G-20. Want to know how many countries PM is talking to to bring back black money."
Attacking BJP's pre-election mandates about bringing back black money within 100 days in power, Kharge said, "People of this country should know that the propaganda done earlier, there is a saying a chicken worth 4 rupees and spice worth 10 rupees. Leave the election speeches aside, how are you going to solve this problem."
"Black money was used as a tool to attack government in office, institutions of the state, by alleging that lakhs of crores of black money stashed abroad and government turning a blind eye. Today there is an opportunity to say sorry, you gave them false dreams, dreams of 15 lakh are false ones," he added.
In Rajya Sabha, the Congress leader and former minister Anand Sharma took the attack to BJP.
He said, "Cases of tax violation have to dealt with appropriately."
Like Kharge, Sharma was also highly critical of BJP's claims made in election-mandate.
He said, "To attack government in office by alleging that there are lakhs stashed abroad, if I take this house's memory back to 2011. Promise was made to bring back black money within 100 days."
Sharma added, "Country has been misled, credit was not given to the government for signing agreements with other countries. We didn't misled the people of this country, we didn't say Rs 386 lakh crore as said by a Baba is lying in accounts abroad. "
Sharma also attacked Modi of his promise, he made during general elections which ran on you-tube.
He said, "PM had said it is on YouTube, the money that will come back will be equivalent to 5-year's budget. He said that every citizen will have Rs 15 lakh in his account."
