Indira Jaisingh's NGO barred from receiving foreign funds, lawyer cries foul

New Delhi, June 2 (IBNS) Noted lawyer Indira Jaising's NGO 'Lawyers' Collective' has been barred from receiving foreign funds after alleged violation of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act or the FCRA, reports said.

Criticising the government for the Home Ministry order, she told NDTV that it's an attempt to "intimidate" her. ." "Those who question the government's policies are targeted. It is a pattern", she said.

'Lawyers' Collective' allegedly received foreign funding between 2006 and 2007 and 2013 and 2014.  The Home Ministry alleges it found discrepancy in the filing of annual returns by the NGO where Ms Jaising was functioning as Secretary. It has asked the NGO to submit its replywithin 30 days.

The Home Ministry says it  has "prima facie" concluded that the NGO violated various provisions of the FCRA. It also said its records  "were not satisfactory and did not provide adequate explanation vis-a-vis the violations found and pointed out".

Calling it a "blatant attempt to victimise" the organisation, Lawyers' Collective has said it will challenge the order.

The NGO also said  Jaising was a "public servant and not a government servant, on whom there was no bar to receive foreign contribution" and that she was "only paid remuneration for her services rendered to LC."
