India's first transgender SI ready to take charge
Salem, Feb 16 (Just Earth News/IBNS) Prithika Yashini, India's first transgender Sub Inspector, is ready to take charge as she received her appointment order along with 21 others, here on Monday, after a legal battle.
Yashini, whose application was rejected earlier due to her gender, was appointed after the Madras High Court ruled in her favour and asked the Tamil Nadu government to create job vacancies for people of her gender.
She receiver her appointment letter from City Police Commissioner Sumit Saran.
Upon receiving her letter, Yashini was quoted as saying by The Hindu, "My aim is to become an IPS officer."
In a significant judgment earlier, the Supreme Court of India had called on the government to ensure equal treatment and rights for the transgender people. India’s census report in 2014 says the Third Gender counted at 4,90, 000 which the transgender activists say is just six to seven times lower than the actual figure.
While many of the transgender live in penury and often beg on the streets, in India, more and more transgender people are now holding official positions in fields ranging from academics to governance.
