New Delhi: India was on Wednesday elected to the UN Statistical Commission, the highest UN statistical body, for a period of four years, starting on January 1, 2024, beating off tough competition from South Korea, China and the UAE.

India secured 46 out of 53 votes, leaving rivals South Korea (23 votes) China (19) and UAE (15) far behind.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar conveyed his congratulations to the Indian team, saying India’s expertise in the field of statistics, diversity and demography has earned it a seat on the UN Statistical Commission.

In tweets, the EAM said: “India elected to the highest UN statistical body for a 4-year term beginning on 1 January 2024! Congrats Team @IndiaUNNewYork for coming through so strongly in a competitive election. India’s expertise in the field of statistics, diversity & demography has earned it a seat on the UN Statistical Commission.”

India won handsomely in the just-completed multi-cornered election to the UN Statistical Commission, with four candidates for just two seats.

The Statistical Commission consists of 24 member countries of the United Nations, elected by the United Nations Economic and Social Council on the basis of an equitable geographical distribution. The term of office of members is four years.
