Increasing trend of disruptions in Parliament should stop: Lok Sabha Speaker
New Delhi/UNI: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday said public representatives should not compete in creating disruptions in the House, adding that the increasing trend of disruptions in Parliament should stop.
Speaking at the concluding ceremony 82nd All India Presiding Officers Conference (AIPOC), the Lok Sabha Speaker also stressed on increasing the number of sittings of legislatures, and said "One Nation, One Legislative Platform" would be achieved very soon.
In his valedictory remarks, the Speaker emphasized that Legislatures must run smoothly in the interest of development and people’s welfare.
"Increasing trend of indiscipline, disruption, and uproar in the Legislatures, have become a matter of grave concern, and must stop," Birla said.
The Speaker urged the Presiding Officers to hold discussions with Leaders of political parties to ensure smooth conduct of the proceedings of the House.
Birla called for maintaining decorum and discipline in the House.
"Public representatives should not compete for creating disturbance and disorder in the House, rather they should compete for bringing positive changes in the lives of the people through development and innovation," said Birla.
Birla also said that a clear action plan will be prepared to increase the number of sittings of the legislatures and urged public representatives to ensure comprehensive discussions and dialogues by devoting maximum time to discussions on the major issues affecting the people so that the socio-economic condition of the people improves for the better.
Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur also talked about indiscipline in the House, and said "Parliament is a place for debate, not a place to tear papers, that can be done on the road."
He also said the scenes of commotion, and tearing of papers in the House lowers the dignity of Legislative Bodies and emphasized on the need to improve the quality of debates.
The two day Conference was attended by 26 Presiding Officers and 20 Secretaries of Legislatures from across the country.
The comments from the Speaker and the minister come days ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament which is set to start on Nov 29.
