I resigned as mark of protest against anarchism: JU VC

Kolkata, Jan 13 (IBNS): Outgoing Vice Chancellor of West Bengal's Jadavpur University Abhijit Chakraborty on Tuesday said he did not resign from his post under any political pressure but as a mark of protest against anarchism.
"I have not resigned under any political pressure. People behind the agitation are political. The students of the university have become victims of political scenario. I have resigned as a mark of protest against anarchaism,” he said while addressing a press conference here.

He also blamed a section of teachers of the university for conspiring against him.

"I have always taken a soft take, not allowing the police inside the campus. The hope was shuttered by some students and teachers as a mark of protest," he said.

"The situation in JU is gravely intense as the person connected to the university who are agitating do not have an alliance to the constitution of India," said Chakraborty.

After months of turmoil, Abhijit Chakraborty on Monday finally resigned from his post.

The move came after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced that Chakraborty has expressed his desire to resign from the post.

Banerjee earlier visited the university campus to meet students who were participating in a hunger strike in demand of Chakraborty's resignation.

Speaking to students, Banerjee had said: "Vice Chancellor of Jadavpur University has expressed his desire to resign."

The students were seen bursting into joy as they welcomed the announcement.

"I want peaceful environment to prevail in JU. There must be conducive atmosphere for education," Banerjee had said.

Banerjee had said the students of Jadavpur University are very talented and she was concerned about their future.

Earlier in the day, the stalemate in Jadavpur University had entered a new phase with parents of the agitating students sitting on a 12-hour hunger strike at the campus gate demanding resignation of Chakraborty.

The parents, who joined the demonstration showing solidarity with their children's cause, said the one and only solution to the present situation was in the resignation of the VC.

The students were on a hunger strike for eight consecutive days.

Situation in the University campus has been on boil for over the last few  months over the alleged  molestation of a student by seniors and a police crackdown on agitating students who surrounded the VC's office demanding punishment of the guilty.

The incident led to a running feud between students and authorities. With moral support coming from different sections of society, a section of students even boycotted the convocation held on Dec 24 maintaining that the VC must step down.

A fresh controversy arose when a student refused to accept her certificate from Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi after climbing the podium and the head of the state reportedly asked her to leave the place.

On Saturday, the Governor  warned the VC against delaying action in the molestation case. He also expressed concern on the condition of some fasting students.
