Hyderabad: Hindu man killed in a crowded road for marrying Muslim girl

Hyderabad: A Hindu man was stabbed and beaten to death in plain sight by the relatives of his Muslim wife, who tried to fight off his assailants and screamed helplessly, on Wednesday evening, media reports said.

The entire episode was caught on camera.

B Nagaraju, 25, who worked as a car salesman had married Syed Ashrin Sulthana last January. The couple had been "childhood sweethearts" and decided to tie the knot against the wishes of Sulthana's parents.

On Wednesday, around 8.45 pm, the couple left home on their bike when two men accosted them and attacked Nagaraju with knives and iron rods.

According to media reports, camera footage shows a rapid accumulation of a crowd with many people recording the horrific incident but none making an effort to rescue the young couple.

In the recordings, Nagaraju soon appeared to be a lifeless mass, his face almost a bloodied pulp while his wife was seen lunging at one of the attackers in a desperate attempt to stop another attack on him.

It was when some onlookers pounced at the attacker, hitting him and chasing him off.

Later, Sulthana identified him as her brother. Her relatives, including her brother, managed to kill her husband within seconds in the middle of a buzzing road.

"They killed my husband in the middle of the street. Five people attacked. My brother and others. There was nobody to help us. I begged everyone. They killed him in front of my eyes," Sulthana, dazed with grief, told reporters today, according to NDTV.

"Why did people come if they couldn't do anything? They only watched. It happens before their eyes, someone being killed, can't people see? I fell on him so I could save him. But they pushed me away. They hit him with iron rods and broke his head."

Nagaraju and Sulthana had married in an Arya Samaj ceremony on January 31. They had been in a relationship since class 10 but the Sulthana's family was dead against her marrying outside the religion.

After the wedding, Sulthana had changed her name to Pallavi.

She told reporters that she had tried to stay away from Nagaraju but couldn't stop her feelings.

"I told him if I don't marry you, I won't marry anyone else. I told him life or death is with you only. I will die. Before our marriage, I didn't speak to him for two months, so I could just die,'' she shared with reporters, weeping, according to the NDTV report.

Her family had threatened Nagaraju with dire consequences if he didn't stay away from her.

"We filed a complaint with the police on the life threats from the girl's family. Due to police negligence, today I lost my brother. He was the sole bread earner of the family," Nagaraju's sister Ramadevi told news agency ANI.

While the attackers managed to escape, they were caught on security cameras and the mobile phone videos recorded by witnesses.

The police have formed teams to catch the killers seen on the camera.

The gruesome murder has sparked tension in the Saroornagar area of Hyderabad.

According to news agency PTI, Sulthana told reporters that five people had attacked her husband on the road. She also said she had known Nagaraju for over 11 years.
