Hurricane Mathew takes nearly 900 lives in Haiti before killing four in Florida

Florida, Oct 8 (IBNS) : A weakening but still powerful Hurricane Matthew barreled north along the U.S. east coast early Saturday leaving at least four persons dead in Florida after wreaking havoc in Haiti, killing almost 900 people, media reports said.

Matthew was downgraded to a Category 2 hurricane as it approached the coasts of Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina in the predawn hours, but ploughed through its path in Florida and left  more than 1 million homes and businesses without electricity, Daily News said.

The storm – the worst to threaten the Atlantic Seaboard in more than 10 years – killed at least 877 people in Haiti on Friday and left tens of thousands homeless before making its way towards Florida.

The hurricane triggered mass evacuations along the US coast from Florida through Georgia and into South Carolina and North Carolina.

US President Barack Obama urged people not to be complacent and to heed safety instructions.
