Huge voter turnout is a positive sign of our democracy: Rajnath
New Delhi, Nov 25 (IBNS): Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said that the huge voter turnout in Jammu & Kashmir and Jharkhand elections is a positive sign of our democracy.
Reacting to the voter turnout on Tuesday’s election, the Union Home Minister said that he is happy to learn of the huge voter turnout in the first round of voting and "it is a positive sign for our democracy."
Singh also said that defying threats from militants and Naxals, the people of J&K and Jharkhand have rejected the ideology of terror & violence.
Amid tight security and shut-down, polling ended peacefully on Tuesday in the first of the five-phase assembly elections in 15 assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir with 70 percent voter turnout in the state.
Polling percentage may go up later in the evening.
No untoward incident was reported in the first phase polling, a government official told IBNS.
Polling in the state started at 8 a.m. and ended at 4 p.m.
The assembly segments which went to polls in the first phase include Gurez, Bandipora, Sonawari, Kangan and Ganderbal (in Kashmir), Bhaderwah, Ramban and Banihal (in Jammu division); and Nobra, Leh, Kargil and Zanskar (in Ladakh).
In Jharkhand, polling was held in 13 of 81 constituencies in the first phase, all spread over six districts including Palamau, Gumla, Lohardaga, Chatra, Garhwa and Latehar.
