Himanta Biswa Sarma takes oath as Assam CM for second term after BJP’s landslide win
Guwahati/IBNS: Himanta Biswa Sarma, the poster boy of Bharatiya Janata Party in Assam, on Tuesday took oath as the state’s Chief Minister after the saffron camp stormed back to power for a third consecutive term.
Sarma took oath as Chief Minister for his second term in office in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several senior BJP leaders in Guwahati.
Sarma had first assumed office as Chief Minister in 2021 when the BJP returned to power in the northeastern state for a second straight term.
The BJP-led NDA retained power in Assam with a landslide victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, winning more than 100 seats in the 126-member Assembly.
The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led BJP emerged as the single largest party with 82 seats, comfortably crossing the majority mark on its own.
The Indian National Congress won 19 seats, while Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People's Front secured 10 seats each.
The All India United Democratic Front suffered a major setback, managing to win only two seats in the election.
