High Court stay in Gujarat on compulsory voting in civic polls
Ahmedabad, Aug 21 (IBNS) In a setback for the Gujarat government, the Gujarat High Court on Friday stayed the order for compulsory voting in municipal elections.
The state government had in July notified compulsory voting-a thing to be implemented for the first time in an Indian state.
Under the law a voter is liable to face punitive action in case he or she fails to vote in the local body elections.
The local body polls in the state are likely to be held in September and October.
