Hardcore ULFA (I) militant killed in Assam encounter

Guwahati, Dec 1 (IBNS) : A hardcore militant belonging to banned United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) was killed in a fierce gun fight with security forces in Assam’s Udalguri district on Friday. 

Based on intelligence input about presence of a 5-member armed group of the outfit at Khoirabari village in the BTAD district, police and troops of Red Horns division had cordoned off a house where the militant group had took shelter.

A top police official said that, the inmates of the house were held captive by the militant group.

“When troops cordoned off the house, the militants started firing. During the gun fight with the militant group lasting for at least 5-6 hours a hardcore militant identified as Rajen Deka, who led the group killed on spot,” the police official said.

Other four militants of the group had managed to flee from the encounter area.

The top police official said that, the slain militant had joined the outfit 15 years ago and took charge as a self styled sergeant major and commander of the banned group led by Paresh Baruah in Udalguri and Darrang district.

Security personnel had recovered one AK-47 rifle, a foreign made pistol, ammunition, mobile phones, Indian currency notes in possession from the slain militant.

Meanwhile, top police and army official had rushed to the area and launched massive operation to hunt the fled militants.
