Herat, May 23 (IBNS) At least three gunmen on Friday attacked the Indian Consulate in Afghanistan's Herat city with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades, said officials.

However, no diplomatic staff was injured in the attack that began at 3.25 am.

Security forces, including soldiers of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), immediately cordoned off the area and a heavy bullet exchange started.

According to reports, two attackers were gunned down in the encounter.

Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin tweeted: "#India's Consulate in Herat, #Afghanistan attacked. Brave ITBP personnel and Afghan soldiers rebut attackers. All safe. Operation underway."

"#India-#Afghanistan officials in touch on attack on India's Consulate in Herat. Foreign Secy Sujatha Singh monitoring situation. All safe," he posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.
