Gunfight rages in south Kashmir

Srinagar/UNI: A gun battle was raged between militants and security forces in Kashmir on Thursday, officials said.

They said the gun battle erupted at Baddigam, Zainapora in south Kashmir's Shopian district during a cordon and a search operation in the area following an input about militant presence.

"As the joint team of forces cordoned the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists opened fire triggering a gunfight," a security official said. Police said that forces are on the job.

"#Encounter has started at Badigam, #Zainapora area of #Shopian. Police and security forces are on the job. Further details shall follow," a police tweet said.

The encounter in Shopian erupted a day after a local minority member Satish Kumar Singh was shot dead in the Kulgam district.
