Group Captain Varun Singh, lone survivor of Tamil Nadu chopper crash, succumbs to injuries

Bengaluru/IBNS: Indian Air Force (IAF) Group Captain Varun Singh, who was injured in the Dec 8 Tamil Nadu chopper crash involving Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Bipin Rawat and his wife Madhulika Rawat, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital here on Wednesday.

Group Captain Varun Singh, who was the only survivor after the crash, was on life support, reports said.

He died at Bengaluru military hospital, where he was moved from Wellington in Tamil Nadu's Coonoor.

The IAF has put up a tweet which reads, "IAF is deeply saddened to inform the passing away of braveheart Group Captain Varun Singh, who succumbed this morning to the injuries sustained in the helicopter accident on 08 Dec 21. IAF offers sincere condolences and stands firmly with the bereaved family."

Mourning his demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "Group Captain Varun Singh served the nation with pride, valour and utmost professionalism. I am extremely anguished by his passing away. His rich service to the nation will never be forgotten. Condolences to his family and friends. Om Shanti."

A tri service enquiry regarding the crash, that killed all 14 co-passengers, has been ordered by the IAF, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said last Thursday.

The enquiry will be headed by Air Marshal Manvendra Singh, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Training Command, said Singh in Parliament.
