New Delhi, Feb 19 (IBNS): The Union cabinet on Tuesday approved an additional 3 per cent dearness allowance above the existing 9 per cent for central government employees and pensioners.

Dearness allowance, popularly known as DA, is paid to employees to counter the effects of inflation in the market.

The DA hike will be effective retrospectively from January 1, 2019.

This will cost the state exchequer Rs 9,000 crore and benefit approximately 1.1 crore government employees and pensioners, reports said.
