Game changer: India, Bhutan launch UPI-linked postal remittance plan
India and Bhutan have strengthened bilateral ties in the postal sector, aiming to enhance connectivity, service delivery, and institutional collaboration between their postal administrations.
A major highlight of the engagement is the upcoming launch of the cross-border remittance initiative integrating the Universal Postal Union (UPU) PosTransfer system with Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
The initiative is expected to enable efficient and affordable remittance services between the two countries through postal networks, improving financial connectivity and expanding access to digital remittance services.
During the visit, senior officials from the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on postal cooperation, establishing a structured framework for collaboration between India Post and Bhutan Post.
According to an official statement, the MoU focuses on cooperation in key areas such as postal operations, technology development, capacity building, logistics connectivity, philately, and knowledge exchange.
Both sides also underscored the importance of capacity building and professional development.
Under the agreement, Bhutanese postal officials will participate in training programmes in India alongside their Indian counterparts at institutions of the Department of Posts, including the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai National Postal Academy and other training centres.
These programmes will cover operational expertise, management capacity, and emerging technologies in the postal sector.
India and Bhutan further agreed to deepen cooperation in the technology domain by sharing best practices related to India Post’s evolving digital ecosystem.
This includes collaboration on digital postal systems and initiatives such as the Digital Address Code to improve addressing, logistics planning, and overall service delivery.
The two countries also welcomed continued collaboration in philately and cultural exchange, with Bhutan Post invited to participate in philatelic exhibitions organised in India.
India expressed its readiness to share expertise in postal financial services, including leveraging postal networks to support financial inclusion by mobilising public savings and delivering accessible financial services to communities.
The statement added that strengthened cooperation between India Post and Bhutan Post will help modernise postal systems in both countries, ensuring they remain efficient, inclusive, and responsive to the evolving needs of citizens and businesses.
