Fresh setback for BJP as Congress wins big in Chhattisgarh urban body polls
Raipur/IBNS: After West Bengal and Rajasthan, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has received a fresh jolt in 15 urban body polls in Chhattisgarh.
As per a report by NDTV, the BJP's arch-rival Congress has won 174 of 300 wards while the saffron brigade lagged behind with 89.
31 Independents have won while the Janata Congress Chhattisgarh (J) has got six seats.
Reacting to the results, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and Congress leader, Bhupesh Baghel, said as quoted by NDTV, "Results in all municipal bodies are in favour of the Congress.
"These results show the success of public welfare schemes of the state government. People have shown faith in three years of the Congress rule in the state and given their mandate in favour of the party."
Days ago, the Congress had won more seats (278) than the BJP (165) in the Panchayati Raj Elections in four districts of Rajasthan.
In the violence-marred Sunday civic polls in Kolkata, the BJP won only three seats amid the Trinamool Congress (TMC)'s dominance, falling behind the Left in terms of vote percentage.
