Former UP CM and Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav dies

Gurugram: Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav died on Monday after prolonged illness.

He was 82.

He was undergoing treatment at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram.

Former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav, who is the son of Mulayam Singh Yadav, confirmed the death of his father with a tweet posted on the official Twitter handle of the party.

"My respected father has passed away," Akhilesh Yadav tweeted.

Mulayam Singh Yadav was the founder-patron of the Samajwadi Party.

He served for three non-consecutive terms as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, and also served as the Minister of Defence, Government of India.

A long-time parliamentarian, he was the Member of Parliament, representing the constituency of Mainpuri in the Lok Sabha, and has also earlier served as the Member of Parliament from Azamgarh and Sambhal constituencies.

Narendra Modi mourns:

India PM Narendra Modi tweeted: "Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji distinguished himself in UP and national politics. He was a key soldier for democracy during the Emergency. As Defence Minister, he worked for a stronger India. His Parliamentary interventions were insightful and emphasised on furthering national interest."

He said: "I had many interactions with Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji when we served as Chief Ministers of our respective states. The close association continued and I always looked forward to hearing his views. His demise pains me. Condolences to his family and lakhs of supporters. Om Shanti."
