Formation of Government in Delhi gains pace
New Delhi, Oct 29 (IBNS): Whether Delhi will have a government in place soon will be decided by Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, who on Wednesday decided to invite political parties to explore possibility of government formation in Delhi, a day after Supreme Court's rap over delay in taking a decision on the issue, media reported.
Jung met Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday morning after the former returned from a foreign trip on Tuesday night.
The two were reported to have held consultations, where Lt Governor has reportedly apprised Rajnath of his move to call the parties before taking a final decision on ending the political uncertainty in Delhi.
This comes after President Pranab Mukherjee agreed that the possibility of a "popular government" should be explored in the capital, which has been under president's rule since February after the AAP government's resignation.
"In view of the President's approval to explore the possibility of installing a popular government in Delhi, Lt. Governor would be exploring the possibilities with the leaders of all political parties over the next few days," media quoted LG's office as saying.
Reacting to this, Kejriwal on Wednesday demanded that the LG call an all-party-meeting immediately and take a decision on the future of course of action.
In micro-blogging site, Kejriwal wrote, “LG says he will call all party meeting in "next few days"? Why next few days? To seek adj in SC tomo? We demand that LG shud call all party meeting today itself, take final decision by eve and inform court tomo accordingly.”
As a matter of fact, on Tuesday, the Centre informed the Supreme Court that President Pranab Mukherjee had accepted a proposal by the LG to invite the BJP to take a shot at the power in Delhi.
The apex court was hearing a petition filed by AAP seeking dissolution of the assembly.
During hearing, a five-judge bench of the top court headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu criticized the Lieutenant Governor and the Centre and said, "In a democracy, President's Rule cannot go on forever. The Lieutenant Governor should have taken a decision on government formation at the earliest instead of waiting for months."
The case will come up for hearing on Thursday.
In the mean time media reported that BJP, which is the single largest party with 28 legislators is yet to decide on forming a Government.
BJP, as been learnt is preparing for three possibilities; the court dissolves the assembly and calls for fresh polls; the party is invited to form a government; the party waits for the assembly by-poll results.
“We will take a decision at an appropriate time once we are invited," Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay was quoted by media as saying on Tuesday.
