Flood-like situation develops in West Bengal
As many as 50 relief camps have been opened at the affected areas and more than 12,000 people have taken shelter there.
Over 12 lakh people have been affected in the flood-like situation.
According to officials, at least nine deaths have been reported so far from several districts.
Disaster Management Group (DMG) personnel and 44 medical teams have been deployed for rescue operations at the affected zones.
Several villages and development blocks in Howrah, Hooghly, East Medinipur, Birbhum, East Burdwan, Birbhum, Bankura and Murshidabad districts have been submerged.
A senior official of state irrigation department told IBNS that several new areas would be submerged as DVC is planning to release more water in next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said, "The Centre should do renovation works in DVC dams to increase those water retention capacity."
"In every monsoon, these dams of DVC release a huge amount of water, which submerge parts of West Bengal," Banerjee added.
