“Most of the injured persons are seriously injured, but we cannot say how them are in critical condition and referred to Goalpara hospital in Assam for further treatment,” Shailendra Bamaniya, the district police chief of North Garo Hills, said.

The occupants of the pick-up were proceeding towards Adokgre village under the Kharkutta assembly constituency to attend an election rally in which former Chief Minister and TMC leader, Dr Mukul Sangma was to address the gathering.

The deceased were identified as Merina Sangma, Sabina Marak, Kukila Momin, Tesa Sangma and Sosin Marak.

Bamaniya said an investigation is on to ascertain the exact cause that led to the road accident, even as police have registered a suo moto case in connection with the accident.
