FIR against Abhishek Banerjee over ‘provocative speeches’ during West Bengal poll campaign

According to the complaint, social activist Rajib Sarkar lodged an FIR on May 5, a day after the election results were declared, alleging that Banerjee made multiple contentious remarks during campaign rallies held between April 27 and May 3.

The complainant also submitted links to several speeches as supporting material.

Allegations include threats and attempts to incite enmity

The FIR claims the speeches allegedly promoted enmity between groups, disturbed public order, and included threatening references directed at Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Police said the content of the speeches, as cited in the complaint, was capable of disturbing communal harmony and creating public unrest.

It also alleges that aggressive language was used against opposition workers during campaign events.

FIR registered under multiple BNS and election law Sections

The case was registered on May 15 at 2:45 pm under Sections 192, 196, 351(2), and 353(1)(c) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with provisions of the Representation of the People Act.

Investigators have been assigned to examine the material submitted, including video links and speech recordings, to verify the allegations.

Sub-Inspector Somnath Singha Roy has been tasked with leading the investigation. Police officials said the case is currently at the preliminary stage and further action will depend on verification of evidence.
