Farmers clash with cops near Thane over defence land

Mumbai, June 22 (IBNS) Farmers near Thane in Maharashtra clashed with police on a national highway over a Navy aerodrome, leaving several cops wounded, said media reports on Thursday,

Reports said the famrers were protesting against a wall being built around an old aerodrome in the region by the Navy to which the land belongs.


The local farmers had demanded earlier that the land be given to them but the same was denied.

The protest turned violent and the agitators resorted to arson. on Thane-Badlapur highway against the acquiring of the land by the defence ministry.

When the police tried to quell the mob which blocked the highway it turned more violent, leaving several cops injured.

Additional forces were rushed to the spot, said reports.
