Explosion-like sound triggers panic near Kolkata NIA office

| | Nov 11, 2014, at 03:54 am
Kolkata, Nov 10 (IBNS) Panic gripped Salt Lake area of Kolkata on Monday night when a huge explosion like sound was heard near the anti-terror investigating agency NIA, which is now probing last October's accidental Burdwan blast in West Bengal that led to the unravelling of a terror plot to kill Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The sound was heard near a bus stop adjacent to the CRPF camp in Salt Lake where the interim office of National Investigation Agency (NIA) is housed. Several accused arrested in the Burdwan blast are now kept inside the campus in the NIA custody.

"The sound was heard around 7 pm in the area but we have not found any remnant of explosives," said Rajeev Kumar, commissioner of Bidhannagar City Police.

He said the police is examining the area and trying to find out the cause of the sound.

Some sources said the sound was from a low intensity explosion.

NIA on Monday arrested Amjad Sheikh, a suspected member of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) terror group responsible for the Burdwan blast and the anti-Hasina terror plot.

Earlier police arrested and handed over to NIA Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) commander Sajid, a Bangaldeshi national. He was arrested near the airport of Kolkata on Saturday.

The Burdwan blast incident had taken place on Oct 2 last at Khagragarh area in Burdwan district when the explosion in a house led to the killing of two bomb makers and discovery of a cache of arms and ammunition.

Several arrests were made, leading to the plot to carry out anti-Hasina government activities.

Several terror modules were busted following the explosion and its investigation.
