Efforts to make the Ganga Sagar Mela free of plastic waste

Gangasagar, South 24 Parganas, Jan 13 (IBNS): Every effort is being made the Ganga Sagar Mela-2017 an example for the entire country so far as cleanliness is concerned.

The State Government is  providing all kind of support to people coming to attend the Mela from across the country, said, Minister of health, family welfare and Panchayat, Subrata Mukherjee here yesterday. Briefing the media, he said that administration is always active to tackle any untoward incident.


8200 toilets have been set up by the district administration as the Ganga Sagar Mela-2017 has been declared as Green Mela this year and efforts are made to make it plastic waste-free, he added.

Mukherjee also said 6 lakh people have visited the Mela so far and around 15 to 16 lakh people are likely to attend it till Sunday.

40 ambulances have been kept for providing medical assistance to the pilgrimage.

Security personnel are deployed in large number.

155 CCTV cameras have been installed and drone is also in action to maintain security in the mela ground. No untoward incident reported yet, but 11 persons have been arrested for pickpocket.
