New Delhi/IBNS: In a landmark moment for India’s defence and aviation history, President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday flew the Rafale fighter jet from Haryana's Ambala Air Force Base.

The airbase is significant as the Indian Armed Forces had launched Operation Sindoor five months ago to avenge the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

The Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Murmu’s flight lasted around 30 minutes, reaching high altitudes and manoeuvres that showcased the aircraft’s combat capabilities.

She was briefed by senior Indian Air Force officers before takeoff and expressed admiration for the professionalism and courage of IAF personnel.

Calling the experience “thrilling and unforgettable”, President Murmu said the sortie deepened her respect for India’s defence forces and their commitment to safeguarding the nation.

The Rafale, inducted into the IAF fleet in 2020, represents a major leap in India’s air combat strength.

"The sortie on Rafale is an unforgettable experience for me. This first flight on the potent Rafale aircraft has instilled in me a renewed sense of pride in the nation's defence capabilities. I congratulate the Indian Air Force and the entire team of Air Force Station, Ambala for organising this sortie successfully", the President wrote.

Her flight, officials said, symbolizes not just India’s growing military might but also the empowerment of women in the highest offices of the country.

This is Murmu's second such sortie on a fighter jet.

Earlier on April 8, 2023, Murmu had flown in a Sukhoi-30 MKI jet from Tezpur Air Force Station in Assam.

She was the third President to have flown in a Sukhoi jet after APJ Abdul Kalam and Pratibha Patil.
