DRI seizes 90 gold bars weighing around 15 kg from Guwahati

Guwahati, Jan 11 (IBNS): The Directorate of Revenue of Intelligence (DRI) seized 90 gold bars weighing around 14 kg with valued of Rs 4.55 crore in Guwahati on Thursday, officials said.

A top official of DRI said that, following a tip-off, the DRI intercepted a Bolero SUV along with two persons at Bamunimaidam area in the capital city of Assam and recovered 14.943 kg from the vehicle.

Value of the recovered gold bars are estimated as Rs 4,55,01,435.

DRI officials have arrested two persons in connection with it and they were identified as Chongtham Nehru Singh and Aaron Wangkheirakpam. Both hail from Manipur.

The DRI official said that, the gold bars were brought illegally from Myanmar through Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur and was being carried in the vehicle.

“The gold has been seized under the provision of the Custom Act 1962. The arrested persons are being interrogated to unearth the details of the racket operating behind this smuggling operation,” the DRI official said.

The DRI has seized over 253 kg gold valued at close to Rs 75 crore from North eastern region and West Bengal since April, 2017, which were smuggled from Bangladesh, Myanmar and Bhutan.
