Don't have confidence that emergency cannot happen again: LK Advani
New Delhi, June 18 (IBNS): In a major embarrassment for the NDA government, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) veteran LK Advani has said "forces that can crush democracy have become stronger."
Ahead of the 40th anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency on June 25, Advani in an interview to The Indian Express said: “At the present point of time, the forces that can crush democracy, notwithstanding the constitutional and legal safeguards, are stronger."
In response to a question on what, specifically, is missing, that makes India today vulnerable to the Emergency-like situation, he said: “I do not see any sign in our polity that assures me, any outstanding aspect of leadership. A commitment to democracy and to all other aspects related to democracy is lacking.”
“Today, I do not say that the political leadership is not mature. But I don’t have faith because of its weaknesses. I don’t have the confidence that it (Emergency) cannot happen again," said the BJP founding father.
Reacting to Advani's interview, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Ashutosh tweeted: "Advani's interview is first indictment of Modi's politics. He is saying democracy is not safe, emergency is not far, under Modi's leadership."
"When Modi was to be made PM candidate Advani discussed in his blog about Mussolini and Hitler. He was hinting at the future then under Modi," the AAP leader posted.
