Demonetisation a historic endeavour, Modi has created a new normal, says Arun Jaitley

New Delhi, Nov 22 (IBNS) : Hailing the demonetisation drive as a "historic endeavour," Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has broken all the stereotypes and created a new ‘normal’, reports said.

While addressing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) parliamentary meet, Jaitley said scrapping the high-denomination notes is a significant step that takes a lot of courage to do.

“This is a historic decision. The entire nation is welcoming it. By stopping the ‘normal’ of last 70 years, Prime Minister Modi has created a new ‘normal’,” said Jaitley.

The parliamentary party meeting was convened to effectively counter the anti-demonetisation campaign launched by a united opposition both inside and outside Parliament.

Jaitley said the opposition parties were creating unnecessary trouble, while undermining the demonetisation move.He said the Centre is ready for a debate on the issue.

“We took the opposition by surprise when they asked for a debate and we agreed but before we could reply they started disruption by saying that we don’t want to debate. We are ready for discussion on demonetisation and we have said it several times,” he said.

The Finance Minister said for the next few weeks, the Government will focus on the agricultural sector as farmers need assistance with the Rabi season approaching.
