Delhi hit-and-run: Man killed as SUV hits scooter, carries rider for 3 km on roof, dumps him on road

New Delhi: One person was killed and another critically injured in a shocking case of hit-and-run in Delhi when a speeding SUV hit two men riding on a scooter at the intersection of Kasturba Gandhi Marg and Tolstoy Marg, media reports said

After being hit, the young man riding the pillion was thrown several feet away while the rider landed on the roof of the speeding SUV.

The SUV charged recklessly through Delhi's high-security VIP zone streets with the injured man on its roof without being interrupted by police. The vehicle kept speeding at least for 3 km even as other vehicles kept honking trying to stop it. The SUV then took a sharp turn when the injured man on the roof was flung onto the road.

The incident happened on Saturday night and the entire episode was caught on video.

Eyewitnesses said instead of stopping to evaluate the situation, the driver of the SUV chose to keep driving at high speed while the injured man remained on the roof. The SUV driver dumped the body near Delhi Gate and fled the scene.

Mohammad Bilal witnessed the incident and followed the vehicle on his scooter, capturing it on video. He tried to get the attention of the SUV driver by honking and shouting, but the vehicle did not come to a halt, NDTV reported.

The deceased has been identified as 30-year-old Deepanshu Verma and the injured is his 20-year-old cousin Mukul.

The Delhi Police have registered a case of murder into the incident. The suspect, Harneet Singh Chawla, has been taken into arrest. Chawla's family was also in the SUV with him at the time of the incident.

Deepanshu Verma ran a jewellery shop and is survived by his parents and sister.

His sister Unnati Verma told NDTV that Deepanshu was alive while he was on the roof. He died due to a head injury when the SUV driver flung him on the road. The SUV driver did not stop even as two eyewitnesses honked and tried to flag him down.

She demanded severe punishment for the accused so that “no one ever thinks of doing something like this."
