Day after Diwali, Delhi's air pollution nine times higher than normal

New Delhi, Oct 24 (IBNS): A day after Diwali, Delhi recorded nine times higher pollution level than the normal, media reports said.

The Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPM) which directly impact breathing, stood at 531 mg per cubic metre – the figure was more than five times higher than the normal.

Delhi recorded the highest level of pollution post-Diwali this year followed by Chennai and Bangalore where the SPM level was recorded at 320 and 239 mg per cubic metre repectively.

A warning was also sounded by Gufran Beig, chief scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology earlier.

Sources said the warning was crucial as the national capital dismissed a World Health Organisation (WHO) report in May this year which found New Delhi to have the world's worst air pollution. The study covered altogether 1,600 cities.

It pointed out that India has 13 of the 20 cities with the worst air quality worldwide, reports said.
