Customs seized 158 gold bars weighing 26.26 kg in Manipur

Guwahati, Dec 1 (IBNS) : The customs department on Friday seized 158 gold bars weighing around 26.26 kg from an international gold smuggler in Manipur’s Chandel district, officials said.

Customs officials arrested the international gold smuggler identified as Mohammad Dakruddin hailing from Lilong Kaleikhong area in Thoubal district.

The value of the seized gold is about Rs 7.7 crore in the local market.

Following intelligence input, a special team of customs department had tracked a van near the bridge of the Lokchao river in Tengnoupal district and seized the gold bars from the vehicle.

The smuggler had managed to cross his vehicle near the police check points and the Assam Rifles post at Khudengthabi, about 12 km away from the Indo-Myanmar border.

Meanwhile, customs officials had interrogated him for collecting more information.

A top official of customs department said that, the seizure gold bars were smuggled from Myanmar.

On October 1 last, customs department had seized 12 gold bars weighing around 20 kg and worth Rs 9 crore and arrested two persons in Manipur.

The central agencies and other security agencies had seized huge quantity gold worth over Rs 50 crore and arrested several persons in the north eastern state this year.
